The Sidran Institute is a Top Source of Information on PTSD

By , September 12, 2012 2:47 pm

The Sidran Institute’s website offers excellent, up-to-date information on all aspects of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

It also offers a help desk that provides information on finding therapists, treatment centers, and support groups, as well as recommendations regarding books, videos, newsletters, and journals about PTSD.

I credit Sidran with helping me cope with PTSD. I own many of their books on recovering from trauma, and highly recommend them to anyone living with PTSD, or simply desiring to learn more.

I’ll be writing more on Sidran in upcoming posts.

Need a PTSD Support Group? Find or Start One with Meetup.com

One of the hardest aspects I faced of dealing with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder years ago, was the feeling of being alone. Plus the disorder didn’t even have a name. While I knew on a gut level something was terribly wrong with my life, I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. There was a vague sense of unease and invariably, as I would drive to work in the mornings, I noticed a tightness in my forehead that was very disconcerting.

It was many years later, before I learned that the tightness I’d been experiencing was a sign of depression. I had no one to talk to about what I was experiencing. So I tried to ignore the way I was feeling, and just “suck it up.” It was a difficult way to try and function through daily life.

Today there is such an abundance of knowledge, and of course, much of that knowledge is shared within support groups. Meetup.com can help you find a support group for dealing with Post-Traumatic Stress. If one doesn’t exist in your area, you might want to consider starting your own.

Here is some information on the network from their site:

“Meetup is the world’s largest network of local groups. Meetup makes it easy for anyone to organize a local group or find one of the thousands already meeting up face-to-face. More than 2,000 groups get together in local communities each day, each one with the goal of improving themselves or their communities.

Meetup’s mission is to revitalize local community and help people around the world self-organize. Meetup believes that people can change their personal world, or the whole world, by organizing themselves into groups that are powerful enough to make a difference.”

Meetup helps people connect with various interests. It doesn’t have to be PTSD. That’s just one option. To learn more, go to:

Another Great Website for Combat Vets and Their Families

I love it when I find another terrific website for vets. Lest We Forget-PTSD Family and Military Support Group, is a “peer to peer, veteran to veteran, family to family support group with the belief that PTSD is not just your problem nor does it just affect you.” They are based in Charleston, West Virginia, where they offer a safe and private meeting place, complete with free child care.

Even if you are not in the area, you can benefit by visiting the website. They note “PTSD affects everyone around you but most of all the people who love you most, your family and friends. Our belief is that by helping not only the person suffering from PTSD but the family and loved ones, the road to healing will be less difficult by not having to go this alone.”

The site offers excellent articles and resources. But most importantly, it shares real life struggles with combat vets and their families, and how they are navigating their personal PTSD journeys. Two of their statements particularly stood out for me: Continue reading 'Another Great Website for Combat Vets and Their Families'»
